The Orton Gillingham Approach to Teaching Reading, Spelling and Writing
This is an intense 10-day, 60-hour course that will meet all of the coursework requirements for AOGPE Associate Level Certification. It involves 45 hours of coursework in the OG approach, dyslexia, the brain, assessment, phonology, the structure of language and how to teach it, morphology, handwriting, reading comprehension, and how to write and implement an OG lesson plan. Coursework includes lectures, daily reading, homework, discussions, demonstrations, videos, and hands-on practice of multi-sensory procedures and strategies. It includes 15 hours of Applied Practice time putting what you’ve learned into practice with a student. A mentor teacher will help you write and implement eight 45-minute lessons with a Riverside student, providing you with daily observation and feedback.
What class members had to say about our 2016 course:
“Every piece was helpful and very well taught. Time flew by.”
“I was very pleased with how the Applied Practice worked, and it benefited me in every way.”
Who should take the course:
This course is for teachers, parents, tutors, students, and administrators who are interested in learning about a highly structured, sequential, multisensory approach for teaching children with dyslexia and other language based learning disabilities. No prior teaching experience is required; however, all participants must have a college degree.
This course is overseen by a Fellow in the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. The Read Institute at Riverside provides the only AOGPE accredited Orton-Gillingham training course in Virginia.
